Overall, a benefits website can be a valuable tool for employers to provide employees with easy access to important benefits information and improve communication and engagement around benefits programs.

The goal of a company benefits website is to provide employees with easy access to information about the benefits offered by the company, and to help them make informed decisions about their benefits. A good benefits website should be a central hub for all information related to employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, vacation time, and other perks.

Employees are struggling to navigate the site due to the overwhelming amount of information and difficulty in locating important details on the sitemap, which is hindering their ability to quickly access the information they need.

Conduct a thorough site audit and offer effective solutions for creating a user-friendly site that enhances the engagement, satisfaction, and well-being of both the company and its employees.

This was a different project. Rivian contracted a third-party company to create and design this benefits website without the brand team approving it. Our stakeholders were internal as well as external. But it was still clear what we needed to accomplish.

As we conducted our audit, we examined user engagement, navigation, usability, content, accessibility, in order to identify areas for improvement and provide actionable solutions for enhancing the overall user experience.

After the audit we were able to identify areas of the site that required improvement and we collected a large list of actionable solutions to enhance the overall user experience.

Being an actual employee of the company, it was easy for me to see how I used the site myself. I assigned myself specific items or contact information to find. This exercise led us to suggest the hamburger menu, also known as the collapsed menu icon.

After the extensive audit, we found a considerable number of issues we wanted to address with the stakeholders.

We didn't have the time or the budget to test our recommendations, but we were certainly able to speak to our suggestions and findings from our extensive site audit.

This persona is a new employee who is just starting at the company and may not be familiar with the benefits available to them. They may need help navigating the enrollment process, understanding the different options, and finding resources to help them make informed decisions.

The Wellness Enthusiast

This persona is an employee who is passionate about health and wellness and wants to make the most of their benefits package to support their lifestyle. They may be interested in finding resources to help them manage stress, improve their fitness, or maintain a healthy diet.

The Family Caregiver

This persona is an employee who is passionate about health and wellness and wants to make the most of their benefits package to support their lifestyle. They may be interested in finding resources to help them manage stress, improve their fitness, or maintain a healthy diet.

The Busy Executive

This persona is a busy executive who values convenience and efficiency. They may want to quickly access their benefits information, make changes to their coverage, and find resources to help them manage their health and wellness.

While we were able to offer an extensive list of actionable items to address, we were reminded of the site's limited functionality.

The company that we contracted wasn't building this from scratch, which meant we needed to propose simpler fixes to improve the site.

Project outcome & introspection

Overall, the design process provided me with valuable learning opportunities in areas such as user needs and behaviors, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity and innovation, data analysis and interpretation, and iterative design.

All in all, we were successful in our goal to improve the employee benefits website. We were pleased to hear that our recommendations were well-received, and HR was impressed with our suggestions. They assured us that these issues would be addressed in the next update.

Baby steps

Unfortunately, I assumed that the 3rd party company charged with creating and maintaining the site wasn't using a simple plug-and-play website template, instead of confirming it. Since then, I have strived to confirm things before making assumptions.
