Rivian

Overall, a benefits website can be a valuable tool for employers to provide employees with easy access to important benefits information and improve communication and engagement around benefits programs.

The goal of a company benefits website is to provide employees with easy access to information about the benefits offered by the company, and to help them make informed decisions about their benefits. A good benefits website should be a central hub for all information related to employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, vacation time, and other perks.

Overview

003

Employees are struggling to navigate the site due to the overwhelming amount of information and difficulty in locating important details on the sitemap, which is hindering their ability to quickly access the information they need.

Problem

Conduct a thorough site audit and offer effective solutions for creating a user-friendly site that enhances the engagement, satisfaction, and well-being of both the company and its employees.

Goals

004

Design Process

01

This was a different project. Rivian contracted a third-party company to create and design this benefits website without the brand team approving it. Our stakeholders were internal as well as external. But it was still clear what we needed to accomplish.

Specify scope

02

As we conducted our audit, we examined user engagement, navigation, usability, content, accessibility, in order to identify areas for improvement and provide actionable solutions for enhancing the overall user experience.

Identify the problems

03

After the audit we were able to identify areas of the site that required improvement and we collected a large list of actionable solutions to enhance the overall user experience.

Analyze the findings

04

Being an actual employee of the company, it was easy for me to see how I used the site myself. I assigned myself specific items or contact information to find. This exercise led us to suggest the hamburger menu, also known as the collapsed menu icon.

Brainstorm solutions

05

Prototype

After the extensive audit, we found a considerable number of issues we wanted to address with the stakeholders.

06

We didn't have the time or the budget to test our recommendations, but we were certainly able to speak to our suggestions and findings from our extensive site audit.

Deploy, test, improve

The New Employee

This persona is a new employee who is just starting at the company and may not be familiar with the benefits available to them. They may need help navigating the enrollment process, understanding the different options, and finding resources to help them make informed decisions.

The Wellness Enthusiast

This persona is an employee who is passionate about health and wellness and wants to make the most of their benefits package to support their lifestyle. They may be interested in finding resources to help them manage stress, improve their fitness, or maintain a healthy diet.

The Family Caregiver

This persona is an employee who is passionate about health and wellness and wants to make the most of their benefits package to support their lifestyle. They may be interested in finding resources to help them manage stress, improve their fitness, or maintain a healthy diet.

The Busy Executive

This persona is a busy executive who values convenience and efficiency. They may want to quickly access their benefits information, make changes to their coverage, and find resources to help them manage their health and wellness.

Ideation

006

01

The starting line

I recommended the implementation of a hamburger menu to consolidate the main navigation options. This eliminates redundancy and reduces visual clutter, providing users with a cleaner and more focused browsing experience.

02

Baseball cards

Removing the stroke around the cards will allow for more breathing room. We’ll also address the spacing and typography issues happening here.

03

Relocating these links above the baseball cards will ensure their visibility. And by providing concise and focused link titles, we’ll improve overall scannability.

Quick links

Option One

006.1

01

By eliminating the stroke/container around the cards, we can create a cleaner and more streamlined look, allowing the focus to shift towards the content within the cards. This design adjustment helps in establishing a more balanced visual hierarchy, where the content takes center stage and is easily distinguishable.

Exploring Layout Options

02

This layout provides users with a bit more context for each link. The brief descriptions offer a concise summary or key points related to the linked content. This additional information helps users make informed decisions about which links to explore further. It strikes a balance between simplicity and providing users with a glimpse of what to expect.

Expanding on Quick Links

Option Two

006.2

01

Positioning Quick Links

The optimized positioning of the "quick links" above the baseball cards and beneath the impactful hero image ensures that users can quickly find and interact with the most important content, thereby maximizing usability and satisfaction.

02

With the implementation of a hamburger menu, we have increased the user's focus on the main content of the landing page. By removing the header navigation options from immediate view, users can now direct their attention to the key elements and messaging of the page without distraction.

Streamlined Navigation Experience

Option Three

006.3

01

Maintaining a consistent visual hierarchy is vital for effective design. With the relocation of the "quick links" to a more prominent position, I’ve established a clear and logical visual hierarchy. The hero image remains the primary focal point, followed by "quick links," which act as convenient entry points to the most sought-after content.

Consistent Visual Hierarchy

02

By adopting a hamburger menu, we’ve optimized the site’s usability on mobile devices. The compact menu icon saves valuable screen real estate, allowing users to navigate the landing page comfortably on their smartphones or tablets.

Challenges

Navigating challenges

While we were able to offer an extensive list of actionable items to address, we were reminded of the site's limited functionality.

01

The company that we contracted wasn't building this from scratch, which meant we needed to propose simpler fixes to improve the site.

Limited functionality

02

Time constraints

Tasked with a design audit, we made comprehensive suggestions that HR was unable to implement due to budget constraints.

008

Retrospective

Project outcome & introspection

Overall, the design process provided me with valuable learning opportunities in areas such as user needs and behaviors, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity and innovation, data analysis and interpretation, and iterative design.

01

All in all, we were successful in our goal to improve the employee benefits website. We were pleased to hear that our recommendations were well-received, and HR was impressed with our suggestions. They assured us that these issues would be addressed in the next update.

Baby steps

02

Unfortunately, I assumed that the 3rd party company charged with creating and maintaining the site wasn't using a simple plug-and-play website template, instead of confirming it. Since then, I have strived to confirm things before making assumptions.
